tomorrow, April 9, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord. The actual date for this Solemnity is March 25. However, March 25 was Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion this year and no celebration can take precedence over a day of Holy Week or the Octove of Easter. Therefore, the first available day to celebrate the Annunciation is April 9. In most cases the Church would simply say not to celebrate that feast this year. The fact that we still observe the Annunciation 15 days after its actual date underlines how important it is. The Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord could just as easily be called "The Solemnity of the Conception of Jesus" - note that from March 25 until December 25 are nine months. This Solemnity marks the beginning of God the Son's life as a human being. There are at least two very important elements of this reality. First, God's willingness to enter into the lowliness of human flesh. Second, the importance of human co-operation, the willingness of the Blessed Virgin Mary to say "yes" to God's will. As we observe this Solemnity may we be grateful for God's willingness to become one of us and imitate the faithful "yes" of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Let me also mention that next Sunday, April 15, during the Mass at 5 p.m. Koby James Buth and Brad Paul Spaulding will make a Profession of Faith, be confirmed and receive Holy Communion for the first time. Let us pary for these men as they approach this important event.
